Former Utah State safety Maurice Alexander became the first former Aggie to come off the board at the 2014 NFL draft, being selected by the St. Louis Rams with the 110th overall pick in the fourth round.

The 6-foot-2, 212-pound safety will join a St. Louis team that went 7-9 last season. The last time the Rams drafted an Aggie was wide receiver Kevin Curtis in the 2003 draft.

During his two-year USU career, Alexander had 125 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and seven pass breakups.

"Cannot argue with the Rams taking a safety, from a need standpoint," Mike Sando wrote on ESPN's live coverage of the draft. "They took one, TJ McDonald, not long ago, but he got hurt. That is one position they really need to solidify. Fortunately for them, they are set up front, and that helps."
