When I was called to be the adviser for the Beehive class in my ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I was expecting a printed manual with a schedule of lessons for the year.
Boy, was I surprised when I was given a link to the "Come, Follow Me" page on lds.org for all the lessons and materials to be taught from online.
I was a little skeptical and thought this system of teaching would be more difficult. As I studied each lesson with all of its resources, from general conference talks to videos, I was pleasantly surprised to see how easy it was to teach those 12- to 13-year-old girls the gospel of Jesus Christ. And not only teach them but also help them understand and incorporate each principle into their lives.
With each lesson listed, teachers are given a list of scriptures, conference talks, videos and other helps. Each lesson asks the youths to read the scriptures themselves and then talk about what they read and find an incident in their own lives that fits the scripture and how this would help them.
Especially helpful are teacher preparation videos and explanations of the example of how Jesus Christ taught and how teachers in these latter days can incorporate his method into their own classes. This is uniquely helpful as each teacher can really know how to bring the gospel principles to life and help these youths strengthen their testimonies.
Videos are easily accessed as we can bring our own electronic devices and download the video directly from online into the classroom. These videos are so touching and well done, and they help each one of us learn a principle of the gospel with stories and general conference clips.
Another aspect of teaching the “Come, Follow Me” curriculum has been to letting our youths talk more about what they are feeling and learning. They are encouraged to share stories of inspiration and courage with their classmates, which build everyone’s testimony.
As an adviser, I am converted to the gospel and want to share this conversion with my class. With so many resources at my fingertips, along with my own personal study, these lessons are a joy to study and present to my Beehives.
My teaching improves exponentially as I use all the tools given to me from this website. I feel that these young girls are really grasping the gospel and using what they have learned throughout the week.
In a follow-up each week, we discuss what was learned in the previous lesson and how those principles had benefited them in situations at school or at home, for which I am very thankful.
We have been blessed to experience such insightful Sunday lessons that help our youths grasp the gospel of Jesus Christ. That, in turn, keeps them on the straight and narrow path to their ultimate goal of exaltation.
