SALT LAKE CITY — The former executive director of the Utah Department of Transporation has received an award from an engineering organization.

John R. Njord will be honored by the America Society of Civil Engineers as one of five Outstanding Projects and Leaders Lifetime Achievement Award winners for 2014. The award, which recognizes Njord’s work during his 25-year career, will be presented March 20, during the society’s annual OPAL Gala in Arlington, Va.

During his tenure as executive director, UDOT became known nationwide for innovation and management. Njord’s contributions included accelerated bridge construction; projects delivered using the A+B method, which reduces inconvenience for drivers while decreasing construction time; and increased funding for transportation projects.

With Njord’s leadership, UDOT was an early adopter of the context-sensitive approach to project development, for which Njord became a strong advocate and has since become a widely utilized method.

“During his 12-year tenure as UDOT’s executive director, he served with distinction under four governors and revolutionized the way the organization does business,” Randall S. Over, president of the society, said of Njord.
