Increase the registration fees on low- or zero-emissions vehicles? The Utah Legislature needs to get their heads on straight.
Using a per-gallon tax to acquire funds for road maintenance is so outdated. The right formula would take into consideration miles driven per year and vehicle weight. We drive a Prius and put less than 3,000 miles per year on its odometer. Why should we have to pay 4 cents a mile when someone who drives 60,000 miles a year pays only .2 cents per mile? That doesn’t make sense!
What would really make sense is a formula that also takes into account emissions pumped into our air. I know a fifth-grader who can help come up with this more reasonable way of calculating road maintenance taxes.
