Real Salt Lake redefined what it means to have a rebuilding year.

Most rebuilding years look like what the Utah Jazz are experiencing now, meaning a losing record and being in the bottom of the conference.

Teams going through rebuilding years aren't supposed to make the playoffs, and they're certainly not supposed to make it to the MLS Cup. Maybe RSL should wish for more "rebuilding" years.

However, the greatest Christmas gift RSL could ask for is that new head coach Jeff Cassar is as good at quickly developing his team as outgoing coach Jason Kreis. RSL fans would hate to almost win a MLS title this season only to have the team fall flat next season as the team adjusts to a new head coach.

It's great that RSL had such a great season, but fans have the future to consider. The future of the team is in Cassar's hands.

Cassar worked with Kreis since 2007 and surely learned a lot from him. Therefore, there's plenty of hope that Cassar can keep the same trajectory that Kreis had set before leaving for New York City FC.

RSL fans couldn't ask for anything better.
