DENVER — Utah Valley University senior goalkeeper Lauren Sack has been named the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, as announced Monday by the league office.
A senior from Reno, Nevada, Sack recorded her 11th career shutout in Friday's home finale against Grand Canyon. The Wolverines won the match, 3-0, as Sack and three other seniors played their final match in front of the home supporters at Clyde Field.
Sack faced 13 total shots from GCU in the match and made four saves on her way to her fourth shutout of the season. With her four-year career winding to a close, Sack is UVU's all-time leader in wins (29), saves (294), save percentage (.774) and shutouts. She is also the current WAC leader in saves (81) and saves per game (4.76).
On the offensive side, Player of the Week accolades went to Seattle University midfielder Julia Besagno. The senior scored three goals in SU's two wins last weekend, including a two-goal output against Kansas City.
UVU senior forward Natalie Baker, who tallied two goals and an assist against Grand Canyon, was also nominated for the offensive award.
The 2013 regular season comes to a close this weekend when Utah Valley faces New Mexico State and UMKC, both on the road. From there, the Wolverines get set for their first appearance at the WAC Tournament, which runs Nov. 8-10, in Las Cruces, N.M.
