DOLOMITES, Italy — Mario Richard, a renowned BASE jumper and sky diver from Moab, died Monday while wingsuit flying.
Richard, the owner of Moab B.A.S.E Adventures, was confirmed dead by family and friends in the United States as well as climbing.com and rockandice.com. Italian news media reported Richard hit a cliff wall shortly after his wife, Steph Davis, had successfully jumped.
Originally from Quebec City, Canada, Richard moved to Moab in 2007 to pursue BASE jumping. His company specializes in guided BASE jumps, rock climbing and tandem BASE jumps for people with no experience. Richard married his wife in 2011. To celebrate, the couple ran off the mesa they were married on and glided to the earth with parachutes. The couple and their business were highlighted in a June 2012 article in the New York Times.
Richard told the New York Times in 2012 that he had performed 7,000 sky dives and 2,000 BASE jumps and had never had so much as a sprained ankle.
