TABIONA — A house fire between the Duchesne County communities of Tabiona and Hanna touched off a wildfire Wednesday afternoon.
About 3:30 p.m., Mike Weaver, son of the homeowners whose house caught fire, was apparently cooking outside when the wind picked up and sparked the blaze. The fire completely destroyed the house and spread to the surrounding area.
Federal, state and local firefighters worked to contain the fire and protect two homes in the surrounding area.
"Our number one goal is to save the structures and the homes and people lives," Duchesne County Emergency Management Director Mike Lefler said. "Peoples lives are number one safety for us, that's why we call in as much as we need to be able to make that happen."
Weaver apparently suffered some burns and drove himself to the University of Utah Burn Center for treatment.
Firefighters were still on the scene fighting the fire late Wednesday. Lefler said cause of the fire remained unknown.
"We're not calling it contained or controlled at this point, we still have engines on here, we are demobilizing some equipment though due to the fire laying down like it is," Lefler said Wednesday about 8 p.m.
"We will continue to monitor it throughout the night and tomorrow."
