On Oct. 15, I attended KCPW's live broadcast, "What Do Independent and Third-Party Candidates Have to Offer Utah?" in the city library's auditorium. It was a substantive discussion between five candidates running for Congress that didn't revolve around the two major parties and their talking points. Getting money out of politics was a common theme among the independents, as was climate change. Weird, right?
Can anyone guess what was also mentioned? Sustainable economics. The incorporation of the reality of finite resources and wealth inequality into our economic system. It was refreshingly different from Democratic and Republican debates.
Independents might be ignored in our two party system now, but they are starting a discussion that America needs to have. As Joe Andrade said that night, be a responsible citizen — listen and act.
