WEMBLEY, England — Oribe Peralta and Javier Cortez scored in the second half to give Mexico a 3-1 victory over Japan on Tuesday and secure a spot in the final of the men's Olympic football competition.

Peralta gave Mexico a 2-1 lead in the 65th minute by stealing the ball from a Japanese defender and then sent a swerving shot into the top left hand corner.

Cortez scored deep into added time to seal the win.

Mexico will now play either Brazil or South Korea in Saturday's final.

Yuki Otsu opened the scoring for Japan in the 12th. Marco Fabian then headed in an equalizer for Mexico in the 31st.

Mexico's previous best showing at the Olympics was in the 1968 home games, when the team was beaten 2-0 by Japan in the bronze medal match.
