BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Cougars were able to edge out the Hokies 70-68 in a much-needed road victory. Grades are in for the position groups, and for the team, as a whole, for their performances.

Frontcourt

Brandon Davies was saddled with foul trouble throughout the game, but managed 17 points, five rebounds and four assists. He did most of his damage from the line — hitting 11 of 12 attempts.

His biggest play of the night was swatting away a Hokie shot attempt with just seconds remaining to help secure the win.

Noah Hartsock had his usual game, hitting 7 of 12 shots for 22 points, which led the led all scorers. He also contributed seven rebounds, two steals and three blocked shots.

With Davies sitting out for much of the second half, Nate Austin showed up — finishing with six points and four rebounds. Grade: B+

Wing

Brock Zylstra was a non-factor until the final 26 seconds of the game. With the score tied, he nailed a 3-pointer to give the Cougars the lead for good.

He finished with three points despite playing 27 minutes.

Charles Abouo's shot was off; he scored nine points on 3-for-13 shooting from the field. But he contributed eight rebounds and a late steal to help seal the game.

DaMarcus Harrison was a nice surprise off the bench, scoring three points in nine minutes of play. Grade: C+

Point

Matt Carlino struggled with his shot, putting up seven points on a 3-for-15 night. He found his shot, however, and contributed two latebaskets. And helped out with five assists.

Anson Winder was the biggest contributor off the bench. He subbed in at both the wing and the point positions. The freshman contributed just three points, but accounted for three steals and hit a big free throw late with the game that's still in question.

Craig Cusick played just five minutes with no points, no shot attempts and no points. Grade: B-

Overall

Travelling across country and getting a victory in ACC territory is no easy task. The Cougars proved equal to that task, however, showing a lot of resolve late to secure the win.

Key contributions were made off the bench, particularly by Winder. Although the big-man made a come-back late in the second half, the team showed they had the ability to run the floor without him for most of the second half. Grade: B+
