Raimund Geockertiz, of Millcreek, received the Americanism Medal and certificate from the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution on Nov. 21, according to a news release from Princess Timpanogos Chapter of the DAR.

The Americanism Medal is awarded to those born outside of the United States who become citizens and contribute to their community.

Geockertiz, a retired auto mechanic and owner of Millcreek Garage, escaped from Communist East Germany in 1956, served in the U.S. Army in Korea and became a U.S. citizen in 1965. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Austria in 1962-64 and has served as a bishop, youth leader and Scoutmaster.
