TRIPOLI, Libya — Thousands of Libyans have poured into Tripoli's main square for mass prayers and a rally in support of Moammar Gadhafi as European officials laid out plans to bolster ties with rebels trying to oust him.

The gathering Friday in the capital's Green Square comes a week after another large pro-government demonstration there, showing Gadhafi can still muster significant support in his stronghold Tripoli.

Friday is the Muslim day of rest and generally the day the Middle East witnesses its biggest protests.

In Brussels, the European Union says Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, will meet next week with a delegation of the Libyan rebels' National Transitional Council headed by its diplomatic chief Mahmoud Jibril.
